How to Enjoy the Best of San Diego in a few days


San Diego is one of the most popular destinations in the US, and for good reasons. It has amazing weather, beautiful beaches, diverse neighborhoods, and a lot of fun things to do. Whether you are into history, culture, nature, or nightlife, you will find something to suit your taste in San Diego. In this blog post, I will share with you how to enjoy the best of San Diego in a week, and what to see, do, and eat in this sunny city.





Day 1: Discover the Downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter

On your first day in San Diego, you will want to explore the downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter, the heart of the city and the hub for entertainment and dining. Start your day at the Embarcadero, the waterfront area where you can see the USS Midway Museum, a former aircraft carrier that is now a museum with exhibits and tours. You can also see the Maritime Museum of San Diego, where you can see historic ships and submarines, and the Unconditional Surrender Statue, a giant sculpture of a sailor kissing a nurse.


From the Embarcadero, you can walk or take a trolley to the Gaslamp Quarter, a historic district that is full of Victorian buildings, trendy shops, restaurants, bars, and clubs. Here you can visit the Horton Plaza Park, a public square with a fountain and a stage, and the Westfield Horton Plaza, a colorful shopping mall with a cinema and a rooftop park. You can also visit the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum, where you can learn about the history and culture of the Chinese community in San Diego.


For lunch, you can choose from a variety of cuisines in the Gaslamp Quarter, such as Mexican, Italian, Asian, or American. Some of the popular places are La Puerta, a Mexican restaurant with a happy hour and live music, Buca di Beppo, an Italian restaurant with family-style dishes and a kitschy decor, or Searsucker, an American restaurant with a farm-to-table menu and a cozy atmosphere.


In the afternoon, you can continue to explore the downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter, and visit some of the attractions that interest you. You can visit the San Diego Convention Center, where you can see the famous Comic-Con International, a convention for comic book and pop culture fans. You can also visit the Petco Park, where you can watch a baseball game of the San Diego Padres, or take a tour of the stadium. You can also visit the New Children’s Museum, where you can see interactive and creative exhibits for kids and adults.

For dinner, you can enjoy some of the best restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter, such as Fogo de Chão, a Brazilian steakhouse with a salad bar and a rodizio service, Osetra, a seafood and steak restaurant with a wine tower and a caviar bar, or Cafe Sevilla, a Spanish restaurant with tapas, paella, and flamenco shows.

For nightlife, you can have a blast in the Gaslamp Quarter, where you can find a variety of bars, clubs, and live music venues. Some of the popular places are The Shout House, a dueling piano bar with a sing-along and a dance floor, Fluxx, a nightclub with a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system and a rotating theme, or The Tipsy Crow, a pub with a lounge, a game room, and a comedy club.


Day 2: Explore Balboa Park and Little Italy

On your second day in San Diego, you will want to explore Balboa Park and Little Italy, two of the most cultural and charming neighborhoods in the city. Balboa Park is a huge urban park that is home to the famous San Diego Zoo and many museums, gardens, and attractions. Little Italy is a cozy and lively district that is full of Italian restaurants, cafes, shops, and art galleries.


Start your day in Balboa Park, and visit the San Diego Zoo, one of the best zoos in the world, where you can see over 4,000 animals and 650 species, including pandas, polar bears, gorillas, and koalas. You can also take a guided bus tour, a skyfari aerial tram, or a 4D theater to enhance your experience.


From the San Diego Zoo, you can walk or take a shuttle to the other parts of Balboa Park, and visit some of the museums that interest you. You can visit the San Diego Air & Space Museum, where you can see aircraft and spacecraft from different eras and countries, and the San Diego Natural History Museum, where you can see fossils, skeletons, and dioramas of animals and plants. You can also visit the San Diego Museum of Art, where you can see paintings, sculptures, and ceramics from various cultures and periods, and the Fleet Science Center, where you can see interactive and hands-on exhibits and shows about science and technology.


For lunch, you can choose from a variety of options in Balboa Park, such as The Prado, a Mediterranean restaurant with a terrace and a fountain, Panama 66, a casual restaurant with a beer garden and live music, or The Tea Pavilion, a Japanese restaurant with a tea service and a zen garden.


In the afternoon, you can continue to explore Balboa Park, and visit some of the gardens and attractions that interest you. You can visit the Botanical Building, a wooden lath structure that houses a collection of tropical plants and flowers, and the Lily Pond, a picturesque pond with water lilies and lotuses. You can also visit the Spanish Village Art Center, a colorful village with studios and galleries of local artists, and the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, a grand outdoor theater with a pipe organ and free concerts.


From Balboa Park, you can walk or take a bus to Little Italy, a quaint and vibrant district that is full of Italian heritage and culture. Here you can visit the Piazza della Famiglia, a public square with a fountain and a farmers market, and the Our Lady of the Rosary Church, a Roman Catholic church with a stained glass and a mural. You can also visit the Firehouse Museum, where you can see fire engines and memorabilia, and the Waterfront Park, where you can see a playground and a splash pad.


For dinner, you can enjoy some of the best Italian restaurants in Little Italy, such as Bencotto, a modern restaurant with homemade pasta and sauces, Mona Lisa, a classic restaurant with a deli and a market, or Filippi’s Pizza Grotto, a family-owned restaurant with pizza and subs.


For nightlife, you can have a fun time in Little Italy, where you can find a variety of bars, pubs, and lounges. Some of the popular places are Craft & Commerce, a hip bar with a speakeasy and a tiki room, The Loading Dock, a dive bar with a pool table and a jukebox, or Music Box, a concert venue with a balcony and a VIP lounge.


Day 3: Enjoy the Beaches and the Boardwalks of Mission Beach and Pacific Beach

On your third day in San Diego, you will want to enjoy the beaches and the boardwalks of Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, two of the most popular and fun neighborhoods in the city. Mission Beach and Pacific Beach are adjacent beach communities that share a long and wide sandy beach, a lively boardwalk, and a laid-back vibe. Whether you are into surfing, biking, rollerblading, or sunbathing, you will find something to suit your mood in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach.

Start your day in Mission Beach, and visit the Belmont Park, a historic amusement park that features the Giant Dipper, a wooden roller coaster, and the Wave House, a simulated wave machine. You can also visit the Mission Bay Aquatic Center, where you can rent kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats, and jet skis, and the SeaWorld San Diego, where you can see marine animals, shows, and rides.


From Mission Beach, you can walk or bike along the boardwalk to Pacific Beach, and visit the Crystal Pier, a wooden pier that has a hotel and a fishing spot. You can also visit the Pacific Beach Pier, a concrete pier that has a cafe and a view of the surfers. You can also visit the Tourmaline Surfing Park, a surfing spot that has a parking lot and a shower.


For lunch, you can choose from a variety of options in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, such as Cannonball, a rooftop sushi restaurant with a view of the ocean, The Mission, a breakfast and lunch spot with a healthy and organic menu, or Oscar’s Mexican Seafood, a casual eatery with fish tacos and ceviche.


In the afternoon, you can continue to enjoy the beach and the boardwalk in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, and do some of the activities that interest you. You can surf, swim, or play volleyball on the beach, or bike, skate, or walk on the boardwalk. You can also shop for souvenirs, clothes, and accessories at the many shops and boutiques along the boardwalk.


For dinner, you can enjoy some of the best restaurants in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, such as JRDN, a chic restaurant with steak and seafood and a fire pit, The Patio on Lamont, a cozy restaurant with a fireplace and a patio, or World Famous, a beachfront restaurant with a happy hour and a sunset menu.


For nightlife, you can have a blast in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, where you can find a variety of bars, clubs, and live music venues. Some of the popular places are The Beachcomber, a dive bar with karaoke and trivia, Moonshine Beach, a country bar with a dance floor and a mechanical bull.


The options in San Diego are endless. With the incredible weather & spectacular cuisines, you can't be disappointed.
